Currently working in the School of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield in the UK, I am a social scientist working on the economic sociology and cultural geography of Japan. Specifically, I research the sociology and culture of work and employment, focusing on the system of lifetime employment in large organisations, and I also research the sociological impacts of depopulation in rural regions, and the implications for Japan as a whole under the country's national shrinkage, which began in around 2005-10. I see these two research themes as being emblematic of the light and shadow of Japan's post-war development, each of which is a cause and a product of the other.
