Dan Harple : Curriculum Vitae

PROFILE

Dan’s career has focused on a core theme: real time communications and connections- between people and data.  In that pursuit, he has been an inventor and founder/CEO/Chairman of five companies.  In total, Dan raised 22 venture-financed rounds (from seed through Series D), delivered 5 exits, and generated 11 patents.  He’s produced companies in four main sectors: (1) real-time interactive platforms (VoIP/Streaming/Shared Screens), (2) Consumer Entertainment/Media, (3) “Big Data” real time enterprise integration, and (4) Social/Local/Mobile.  Each of these companies was seminal and advanced the state of the industry in material ways.  He's been behind core technology and a range of patents that are some of the most cited for VoIP, media streaming, real time web communications, collaborative computing, and location-based social media.  If you use Skype, GoToMeeting, or YouTube, Sina weibo, among others, Dan's technology and its pioneering influence has touched your life.

Dan has a strong understanding of shareholder value and investor ROI with a proven high return track record; he has raised  equity and/or debt funding.  He has experience with private placements, venture financings, corporate round financings, PIPE financings, and public merger & acquisition transactions, coupled with a strong skill set in investor relations.  His CEO and Chairman level experience is both in the private and public markets (NASDAQ).

He understands uniquely different types of Sales and Marketing Models necessary for each stage of an emerging company’s rapid growth. He possesses an ability to strategically position a firm’s products and services for transition from early adopter to mainstream markets, and strong leadership abilities enable focused management of technological innovation.  He has skills in recruitment and management of active industry Executives and Board Directors.  He has a strong understanding of business-specific metrics/KPIs and diagnostics as tools for executive management.

Dan’s leadership abilities have enabled focused management of technological innovation.  Deep technical skill set, with 11 patents. Design and architectural planning skills set the foundation for two successful venture backed startups: both concluded in successful M&A transactions (Netscape Communications Corp., and Oracle Corp.), and one lucrative angel backed M&A (Benefon Oyj). Technical expertise areas include; Internet, Web, Web services, Mobility, Services oriented architectures, highly scalable platforms, Enterprise Content Integration, Open Source technology and licensing nuances, audio, video, telephony, interactive multimedia, collaborative tools, concurrent engineering, 3D, CAE/CAD/CAM, open standards & APIs.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Dan is currently Managing Partner of Shamrock Ventures, BV, based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.  Shamrock Ventures, BV provides strategic guidance to structure, start, and navigate companies from inception to liquidity events. It helps position the companies for strategic investors; provide technology transfer to/from the Netherlands/EU and USA; facilitates venture capital investment via its venture capital relationships; facilitates Investment Banking relationships to maximize liquidity; and, provides Operating Management Services to new and high-growth EU and USA-based enterprises.

Dan was formerly Executive Chairman/CEO of GeoSentric Oyj, a position he was elected to after merging the startup he’d founded, GeoSolutions, BV (GyPSii) with GeoSentric.  The Board and investors requested that Dan lead the company in a turn-around effort, which leveraged the intellectual property and business of GyPSii.  Dan subsequently led a 10 million euro PIPE-based recapitalization of the company; two subsequent investment rounds of 17 million euros, also as a PIPE, which valued the company at 6X its publicly traded value.  GeoSentric (NASDAQ OMX: GEO1V) is the parent of wholly owned operating subsidiaries in Holland, United Kingdom, Finland, United States and China.  Dan installed a new senior management team, and restructured the Board.  The company has emerged as a leader in location based mobile social networking, particularly in China.  Its products are based on the OpenExperience™ mobility platform, which integrates social networking, search, location, and mobility. The company rapidly earned the business of global OEMS; Samsung, LG, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Intel, Garmin, and carriers; China Unicom, China Mobile, China Telecom, Turkcell, enabling the embedded bundling of over 150 million GyPSii mobile client apps on a worldwide basis.  Its products received industry acclaim globally, Asia Mobile Awards 2008 “Best Mobile Internet Service,” Symbian Star Developer “Most Innovative Symbian App 2008,” Telecom Asia, “Best LBS Service of the Year 2008,” GSMA “Best Mobile App 2009.”  Dan, as founder and original inventor of GyPSii, developed five patents, which support and provided the foundation for the venture.  Dan, prior to his departure, structured a strategic joint venture with China’s leading Internet brand, Sina, to embed GyPSii technology in the world’s largest microblog, weibo.

Prior to this, Dan was Founder, Chairman and CEO of Context Media, Inc., an enterprise software firm he founded in 1999.  Context Media's purpose was to materially improve the way all digital media (unstructured data) is discovered and accessed within disparate enterprise content repositories and systems.  The company won numerous industry awards (eWeek, Seybold, Demo, etc.) and was the seminal industry player in defining the Enterprise Content Integration (ECI) market segment.  The company differentiated itself with its patented "pipeline technology," designed and built as an open interoperable services oriented architecture (SOA) for disparate content systems real time integration.  The product set enabled enterprise wide collaboration and access to content previously locked in disparate silos, i.e., the "unified view."  Key customers spanned multiple beachhead market segments- Sony, Bertelsmann (Media & Entertainment), CMP (Publishing), Citigroup (Financial Services), and General Dynamics, among others.  Dan received one core patent, which served as the foundation for the Context Media technologies.

Context Media was successfully acquired by Oracle Corporation in July 2005, forming the basis for Oracle's Enterprise Content Integration (ECI) strategy, and is now a foundational element embedded across multiple product lines: the Oracle Collaboration Suite, Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle Enterprise search, and Oracle Data Hubs. Competitive variants of this technology now exist in products such as Google's Search Appliance.

Context Media's investors included leading venture capital firms and corporate partners.  The following firms provided funding to the Company- New Enterprise Associates, Adams Capital Management, Macromedia, Inc., Lehman Brothers, and Silicon Valley Bank.

Prior to Context Media, and post-Netscape merger, Dan's efforts centered on media research in a new company that he co-founded with Todd Rundgren, called Context Labs.  Context Labs focused on exploring and developing technologies to enhance our daily media experiences (audio, video, music, etc.), in the convergence of traditional media delivery systems with the web.  This research led to Dan's founding of Context Media, emphasizing the enterprise access and distribution of disparately located media and related unstructured data.  The Context Labs research vehicle involved conceptualizing and collaborating on Patronet.com, an on-line entertainment/relationship concept, with the interactive artist and musician Todd Rundgren, and his firm, Waking Dreams.  Patronet technology seeded the industry for artist media interactivity, influencing early successful sites by Peter Gabriel and David Bowie, and subsequently became the core technology for Artistent.com, the onetime online entertainment portal founded by former Atlantic Records president, Danny Goldberg.

Prior to Context Labs, Dan was, Senior Vice President/Interactive Media and Collaboration, at Netscape Communications, where he reported to the CEO. Dan merged the company he founded, InSoft, with Netscape in late 1995.  InSoft developed the first generation of Internet media streaming and Internet telephony/ collaborative applications. These products resulted in NetscapeConference, and the Netscape Media Server.  This work provided the seminal contribution to the Real time streaming protocol (RTSP). Mr. Harple was also instrumental in putting together the first generation industry wide group to focus on interoperable real time audio and video. Core components of this work on collaborative computing and streaming media resulted in a significant patent in these areas.  Dan led the efforts for five patents for this venture.

Multiple "firsts" came of the InSoft/ Netscape relationship; (1) first commercially available shared white board, (2) Netscape LiveMedia Developer's Platform, (3) Netscape LiveAudio, (4) Netscape LiveVideo, (5) Major telephony integration efforts with Lucent, (6) Work on the Real time Protocol (RTP), and H.323 Standards. InSoft's application, Communique!, was the industry's first commerical-grade VoIP multipoint audio/video collaborative conferencing product.  These technologies now provide some of the core infrastructure for the way multimedia and real-time interactive communications are utilized on the Internet, e.g., WebEx, NetMeeting, SKYPE, etc., and offered the first commercial products integrating the convergence of traditional telephony services with the internet protocol (IP).

Prior to InSoft, Dan's career focused on 3 Dimensional Computer-Aided Design and Analysis, in the context of Concurrent Engineering and Ergonomic Design.  He held positions with: AMP Incorporated (now part of TYCO), Ingersoll-Rand, Raytheon Company, and the Naval Underwater Systems Center.  He attended Marlboro College, and holds both B.A (psychology) and B.S.M.E. (mechanical engineering) degrees from the University of Rhode Island, where he also completed extensive graduate-level work in Psychology and Mechanical Engineering.

SERVICE & COMMUNITY

Dan's personal efforts are multi-faceted; the creation and nurturing of new companies via personal and investment-related vehicles, K-12 and University education/technology integration, and advisor/LP to several Venture Capital firms.

He currently serves in his fifth year as a Trustee for Amsterdam's International School of Amsterdam, where he also advises on technology curricular integration, and governance. He is also currently a Trustee at the Buzzards Bay Coalition, an environmental/conservation organization in Southeastern Massachusetts.

He also served on the Board of the Marlboro College Graduate Center, as well as the Engineering Council Board at the University of Rhode Island.

One educational effort, as Trustee and Chair of the Technology Committee at the Harrisburg Academy resulted in the school being named as the "Technology Educator of the Year" for the state of Pennsylvania, by Governor Tom Ridge.  Further work at HA resulted in a consortium between PBS, Intel, and the school to explore the integration of high definition television (HDTV) with the web. Work derived from a lecture he gave at the Pennsylvania Information Superhighway Consortium resulted in a white paper that defined several of the technology platforms for then Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge's statewide initiative on high technology.  Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Almond appointed Dan to the Rhode Island State Economic Policy Council in September 2000.

He has been an advisor, collaborator and/or investor in several technology venture capital firms, including Adams Capital Management, New Enterprise Associates, Newbridge Networks Venture Investments, Zoe Capital, Charles River Ventures, The Slater Center for Interactive Technologies, Vantage Point Partners, Rockridge Capital Partners, Greylock Partners, and Valhalla Partners.
