Popular dancing in the Southern The Netherlands and Central Europe, 1795-1830. An entangled history.

Abstract:

Up to the end of the 18de century dancing remained a rather elitist and generally private matter. In the period 1795 up to 1830 we see the complete context within which bals are organised change very fast on very short time. Dancing develops in this period into public form of recreation pre-eminently and become available for broad layers of the population. This evolution has everywhere in North West Europe simultaneous and similar course. Transnational cultural transfers triggered by the migration of bandsmen and dancers, play in the different processes a decisive role. Military operations also played an important role. By means of a thorough analysis of the available sources this research aims to understand and interprete the process of the distribution of new dancing forms and their music components under divergent social groups where they happen to be adopted. Especially attention will be given on the role of cultural mediators and musical sociability.
