Zotero is now compatible with LibraryThing and CiteULike. Users can now capture bibliographic information from both lists of references and individual items in CiteULike and information about any individual book in their LibraryThing collection. As always, compatibility with new sites and tools brings Zotero closer to its goal of supporting seamless online research. In this case, it is particularly exciting to see closer connections between web tools built for managing books and research materials.

We are excited to announce the release of Zotero 1.0.2.

One of the most exciting new features in 1.0.2 is improved support for installing custom citation styles, coupled with the creation of a style repository that includes some fifty new styles, or nearly six times the number of available styles in version 1.0.1. Special thanks to Julian Onions for his contribution of nearly all of these new styles. To add a style, visit the styles page and click Install next to the style you are interested in using.

Zotero 1.0.2 also includes several new site translators, including translators for social media sites Flickr and YouTube. Zotero’s default Open URL resolver has also been changed to the OCLC OpenURL Resolver Gateway, which will allow many Zotero users to automatically find items from their collections in their campus library through the Locate button without editing their preferences.

Zotero 1.0.2 requires new versions of the MS Word and OpenOffice integration plugins.

To see all of the changes, new features and bug fixes, take a look at the full changelog.

We are excited to announce the launch of Zotero 1.0 Release Candidate 2. This release adds many new features.

Zotero now offers full-text indexing of PDFs, adding your archived PDFs to the searchable text in your collection.

Zotero’s integration with word processing tools has been greatly improved. The MS Word plugin works much more seamlessly and we now support OpenOffice on Windows, Mac (in the form of NeoOffice), and Linux.

Zotero is also now better integrated with the desktop. Users can drag files from their desktop into their Zotero collection and can also drag attachments out of their Zotero collection onto their desktop.

We have begun to add tools to browse and visualize Zotero collections in new ways. Using MIT’s SIMILE Timeline widget, Zotero can now generate timelines from any collection or selected items.

The new version of CSL (Citation Style Language), used by Zotero to format references into specific styles, is more human readable and easier to edit. We will be adding many more styles soon.

Users should also notice some performance enhancements. Zotero now runs smoother on Windows and Linux.

Stay tuned for more detailed information on these developments. We will post more documentation and screencasts about these features in the next few weeks. We have also added support for a host of additional web resources:

The Beta 3 release of Zotero includes many new or improved site translators for popular web-based scholarly resources, ranging from relatively small collections of individual journals, such as Nature, to large-scale database aggregators, such as Ovid. With the modified Aleph and Sirsi translators, Zotero should now be fully compatible with a host of additional university library OPACs (Online Public Access Catalogs). We’ve also updated our Ovid translator, giving users enhanced access to some of the most influential databases, full-text journals, and academic content in the sciences, arts, and humanities.

As part of our commitment to internationalization, Zotero users can now automatically capture metadata from Amazon sites around the world.

Other translator highlights:
ISI Web of Science: indexes thousands of scholarly journals in all areas of research, including the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities.

IEEE: indexes and in many cases provides full-text access to electrical engineering and computer science literature.

Factiva: indexes news- and business-related sources, including newspapers, newswires, magazines, and radio and television transcripts.

New translators in Beta 3:

ScienceDirect
Ovid
Blackwell Synergy
SpringerLink
Nature
IEEE Xplore translator
Factiva

You can find a list of other compatible databases, library catalogs, and online resources here. Please be aware, however, that this is an incomplete inventory. Because we are constantly adding and refining translators, we encourage users to test sites for compliance rather than relying exclusively on our documentation. If there are additional site translators you would like to see, let us know on the Zotero forums.
