Current Position

Marine Scientist for Responsible Fishing, Oceana, Washington, DC                                                    2015-Present

Serve as Oceana’s expert on fisheries and protected species, helping to shape the strategy of Oceana’s Responsible Fishing Campaign, including advising and guiding positions on Federal and State fishery policy, management and conservation. Writing, directing, and vetting Oceana’s public statements, advocacy, and outreach on fishery topics.

Executive Secretariat to the Council of NOAA Fellows. Fellows hold Senior Scientist (ST) or Leader (SL) positions, similar in rank to the Senior Executive Service (SES). They are research scientists, lawyers, and advisors dedicated to advancing NOAA science and recognized as world leaders in their respective fields. I oversee daily operations and organization of the council, including all outreach, correspondence, internal NOAA-wide and external as well as with NOAA leadership, and represent the CNF at the NOAA Research Council.

Research Associate II, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution                                                               2004-2008

Ran daily operations of WHOI’s contribution to the ARGO Float Network as well as operation of remotely operate SPRAY gliders as well as computing infrastructure that supported both efforts.

Head Technician, The Ohio State University – Aquatic Ecology Laboratory                                        2003-2004

Headed Walleye parental influence study including sampling trips to Lake Erie and tributaries and the prepping and processing of otoliths, genetic, bioenergetic, and reproductive testing.

Chief Hydrographer aboard the RV Oceanus in the Irminger Sea, analyzing bottle data for the verification of CTD casts. Cruise data aided in the identification of the Greenland tip jet.

Research Assistant, Cornell University - Center for the Environment                                                      2002-2003

Oversaw “Biological Status of the Hudson River Park Sanctuary Waters” project after 9/11 and a Lake Ontario Biocomplexity Project. Collected and analyzed water chemistry, dissolved oxygen, and benthic samples; as well as electrofished, gillnetted and otter trawled for larval and juvenile fish which were further studied in lab. Digitized archival maps for land use using ArcGIS and ArcView.

Research Assistant, US GLOBEC: Georges Bank                                                                                             1999

Hydrographer aboard the RV Albatross IV (AL9906) for the final GLOBEC Phase II Broad-Scale Survey of the Gulf of Maine, used Seabird CTD and rosette bottles to collect water samples for analysis and verification. Also gained experienced with MOCNESS, Bongo, Reeve, and Jel nets.

Led 59 Boston University Kilachand Honors College students through creation of both individually written ecological narratives and SIMILE-based models for one aspect of either the Massachusetts Bay Watershed or Great Lake Tonle Sap in Cambodia.

Boston University, Marine Megafaunal Ecology: SBNMS (BI 546)                                                    Fall 2013

Orchestrated classroom and field experiences for 16 Boston University Marine Program graduate and undergraduate students taking "Marine Megafaunal Ecology: Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and Surrounding Waters," a month long block-scheduled class, including ten days at-sea doing data gathering on either, the SBNMS R/V Auk or the F/V SeaKeeper.

NSF GK-12, Brookline, MA Public Schools, 5th Grade                                                                            2011-2012

Funded by NSF Graduate STEM Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) Program, I brought current scientific topics, scientific method, and scientific reasoning to all subjects of a 5th grade classroom. Culminating in oral reports from each student on one aspect of climate.

NSF GK-12, Cambridge, MA Public Schools, 7th and 8th Grade Science                                             2010-2011

Brought current scientific thinking and reasoning into four 7th and 8th grade science classes in an underserved school in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Provided enrichment exercises, aided, designed, and led new lesson plans, and provided a scientific role model for middle school students.

Boston University, Marine Biology (BI 260)                                                                                              Spring 2010

Led three discussion sections for a total of 51 students. Each week we reviewed two papers I selected ranging from seminal papers to current hot topics in marine science. Students ranged from sophomores to seniors. I wrote, proctored, and graded four exams for all 100 students in the class.

Boston University, Marine Megafaunal Ecology: SBNMS (BI 546)                                                    Fall 2009

Led Marine Science Semester (4-week block scheduled) class for upper level undergraduates. I oversaw both classroom and field experiences for 16 students, including a total of 11 data gathering trips onboard either the SBNMS R/V Auk or the F/V Ocean Reporter, with each student completing a unique research project.

Ran hands-on experimental lab on animal behavior for advanced undergraduates. Used the summer class to edit and execute a complete rewrite of the laboratory manual that was then adopted for future semesters.
