Mary McAleer Balkun is Professor of English and Chairperson of the English department at Seton Hall University. She is author of The American Counterfeit: Authenticity and Identity in American Literature and Culture ((U of Alabama P 2006) and articles on early American literature and pedagogy. She is associate editor of The Greenwood Encyclopedia of American Poets and Poetry: From the Colonial Era to the Present, co-editor with Susan Imbarrato of Women of the Early Americas and the Formation of Empire (Palgrave 2016), and author of the forthcoming New World Upside Down: The Early American Grotesque (U of Alabama P).
