I believe that the adoption of sustainable energy is one of the biggest challenges we face as a civilization. Since oil is our scarcest resource and we burn half of it to fuel our cars it makes sense to adopt electric vehicles. This becomes even more important when we realize electric cars can be used as a buffer that stabilizes the electricity grid and facilitates the introduction of intermittent energy sources like wind and solar.

Apart from producing affordable batteries and electric vehicles we need a smart charging infrastructure. Doing this right saves us many billions of euros in the Netherlands alone. This is where I try to make a contribution by heading the Spark City research program and doing my PhD.
(I do this while working for ElaadNL and my salary is paid by Alliander.)
