Work experience as a consultant at Christian Medical College, Vellore.

 Clinical Work (Inpatient)

  • Consultant in the PM&R department and Rehabilitation Institute (an 83 bedded spinal cord and acquired brain injury centre with 40 staff) of  CMC Vellore (a tertiary hospital) since 1998.
  • Clinical supervision and coordination of registrars in the PM&R postgraduate program (a 3 year national board certification including a thesis).
  • Supervision of the Prosthetic and Orthotic Research workshop and International Committee of the Red Cross project on Prosthetic Research and production.
  • Development of a clinical gait service in the gait laboratory, Rehabilitation Institute.
  • Development of a brain injury service in collaboration with Neurosurgery and Neurology.

 

Clinical Work (Outpatient)

·        A general rehabilitation clinic twice a week (around 16 people a day)  for Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, Arthritis, Amputation, Brain injury and Spinal Cord Injury.

·        Once a week transdisciplinary clinics for:

o       Brain Injury with the departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology fro traumatic brain injury and stroke.

o       Cerebral Palsy with Developmental Paediatrics, Paediatric Orthopaedics, Child and Adoloscent Psychiatry we review and plan together for children with multiple needs.

o       Haemophilia with the department of Haematology

o       Diabetic foot with Diabetic endocrinology, Vascular surgery

o       Neuroradiology with Radiology

o       Previously Neuromuscular clinic (with the department of Neurology)

o       Previously Pain clinic (with the departments of Anaesthesia, Psychiatry)

 

Clinical Work (Surgical)

·        Multiple soft tissue release surgeries for children with Cerebral Palsy,

·        Cystolithotomies and Plastic surgeries for Pressure sores (one morning a week).

·        Minor surgical work includes Cystoscopies, Cystolitholapaxies, and Suprapubic catheterizations (one afternoon a week).

                    

Research

·        Gait analysis in children with Cerebral Palsy:  Kinematic, kinetic, dynamic EMG and energy efficiency data from 32 children with Cerebral Palsy with and without solid and articulated ankle foot orthoses compared with 20 normal children.

·        Postgraduate thesis: A descriptive study of ankle movement in the sagittal plane of children with cerebral palsy. During this time, I developed an evaluation form for children with Cerebral Palsy which is being used by the doctors in our department.

·        I have helped guide projects examining different types of prosthetic feet, upper limb Functional Electrical Stimulation, electric upper limb prostheses, developing a database for normal Indian children’s gait and developing a cost effective gait analysis system, assessing activity and participation in spinal cord and acquired brain injuries and haemophilia and exploring diffusion tensor imaging in brain injury.

·        I have helped nurture a transdisciplinary  rehab research group since 2007 which has been productive in completing 4 research projects.

·        Reviewer for Archives of PMR since April 2007 (9 papers)

·        Reviewer for Disability & Rehabilitation since July 2009 (1 paper).

  • Participating in inpatient care of around 20 persons with largely physical-cognitive sequelae of head injury and around 10 persons with specific neuropsychiatry sequelae at the Janie Heppell Unit, Prudhoe.
  • Participating in the outpatient work of the Medical spasticity clinic, the Dystonia clinic, the Multidisciplinary team clinic, Regional Disability Team Clinic including the administration of Botulinum Toxin.
  • Visiting Rehabilitation Biomedical Engineers’ Paediatric Gait Analysis Service at Palmers Hospital, Jarrow.
  • Participating in the Neurosciences-Rehabilitation ward round and Neuro-radiology meeting on selected Tuesday mornings at the Newcastle general hospital.
  • Participating in clinics and home visits for community Neurorehabilitation with Northumberland Head Injury Service, Morpeth.
