In a conflict zone, some outsiders are less likely to be attacked.  When privileged bodies stand alongside those under threat, certain armed actors are less likely to attack. Peace Brigades International (PBI) sent the first international team of accompaniers to Guatemala in 1983. There are now groups in ten countries, with the largest number (11) in Colombia.
